Another year is done and my running log for 2009 is complete. For two years now I’ve kept track of my jogging/running/walking that I perform in my leisure time. In 2008 I completed just over 600 miles of leisure time exercise. The great thing about running is that it’s free. Minus the cost of shoes and socks and a few pairs of shorts, anyone can do it. You don’t need a GPS watch to get the job done. You don’t need a gym. All you need are your two front feet and a little inspiration and motivation.
The Biggest Loser lost over 55% of his weight, or 239 pounds and how did he do it? He kept moving. There is no secret to weight loss and fitness. Watch how much you eat. Make smart choices about how you choose to live your life and make it happen. If you have no expectations, you’ll meet them every time. This show is proof positive that even the super obese can lose remarkable amounts of weight with diet and exercise.
Running has become a part of my life. Without exercise, I often feel like my day is not complete. Seeking exercise is a state of mind that happens once you experience the benefits of feeling fit. Here is my running log for 2009:
January 58 miles, 612 minutes
February 64 miles, 682 minutes
March 42.1 miles, 597 minutes
April 60.9 miles, 623 minutes
May 96.8 miles, 1189 minutes
June 58.9 miles, 683 minutes
July 72.2 miles, 903 minutes
August 62 miles, 766 minutes
September 61 miles, 634 minutes +race day
October 38.9 miles, 407 minutes
November 47.6 miles, 473 minutes
December 37.9 miles, 350 minutes
700 miles over 7900 minutes. That’s 58 miles a month or 13.5 miles a week or 1.9 miles a day. That’s 659 minutes a month or 152 minutes a week or just under 22 minutes a day. Lets say I burned an average of 10 calories a minute. How much weight did I keep off this year? Twenty-two pounds. I prevented 22 pounds of fat from giving me diabetes, stroke, heart attacks and cancer this year.
What do you have to lose? Make this year the year you join millions of others like Happy and his wife in becoming fit and healthy. We know 80% of some of the the top killing diseases in this country can be prevented by the choices we make. You’re going to thank me when doctors start quitting and hospitals start closing and there will be nobody there to care for your self inflicted diabetes, stroke, cancer and heart disease except perhaps an orderly at the nursing home.
So get out there and exercise. Today is a new day and a new challenge. What do you have to lose, except for some much needed weight?
