FDA Approves GE’s Newest CT Scanner

GE Healthcare has received the FDA OK for its Optima CT660 computed tomography (CT) system. The CT660, which is already available in Europe, Latin America and Asia, distinguishes itself by its compact footprint combined with a modular design and low dose imaging. In addition, it is also one of the most energy efficient CT scanners available and has an “environmental design” that eases refurbishment and end-of-life recycling. The scanner itself is scalable from 32 to 128 slices through purchasable options and features automatic table positioning and a color 12-inch integrated gantry display monitor.

Low-dose imaging is achieved by using ASiR reconstruction technology, which allows for reduced mA in the acquisition of diagnostic images, thereby reducing the required x-ray dose. It also has “Dose Check” technology that notifies and alerts CT users prior to scanning if the estimated dose is above certain preset values, with specifically-defined pediatric and adult alert values, and also provides for audit logging, review, and protocol change control capabilities. For cardiovascular imaging, it combines ASiR and Snapshot Pulse with Adaptive Gating technology, and GE’s CT Advantage Workstation provides further options for cardiovascular and oncology imaging dose reduction.
