Healthcare predictions for 2007

Dr. Richard Reece’s latest blog post lists “12 health care predictions for 2007” – I looked into his crystal ball and was quite intrigued. Here are some highlights (see his blog for the full transcript):

  1. The home care market will boom
  2. Obesity will eclipse smoking as the #1 public health issue in America
  3. Web based patient education will become extremely popular
  4. High deductible health plans (powered by health savings accounts) will dramatically expand their reach
  5. Employee wellness and prevention programs will bloom…

What other trends do you think he missed? Do you disagree with any of his predictions?

I was interested to read that obesity will eclipse smoking as the #1 public health issue in America. I was a farmer and I never had trouble with obesity until I retired and stopped getting enough exercise. Now I go to the gym, but I hate it. It is too impractical. When I peddle on the stationary bike I feel like all that energy is completely wasted. I feel like I should hook up the milk separator to the bike, or something like that. Now I want to give up on the gym, but the wife is not happy about that. Any ideas for meaningful exercise for a retired farmer who was never fat before?

The Spirit Of The Place: Samuel Shem’s New Book May Depress You

When I was in medical school I read Samuel Shem s House Of God as a right of passage. At the time I found it to be a cynical yet eerily accurate portrayal of the underbelly of academic medicine. I gained comfort from its gallows humor and it made me…

Eat To Save Your Life: Another Half-True Diet Book

I am hesitant to review diet books because they are so often a tangled mess of fact and fiction. Teasing out their truth from falsehood is about as exhausting as delousing a long-haired elementary school student. However after being approached by the authors’ PR agency with the promise of a…
