I’ve internalized all the dogma of medicine, for good and bad.
When I was an EMT, green as a twig in an ER, I learned the basics: For any wound with hair employ the razor, and get the hair away from the laceration so the doc could do a good closure.
So, employment week #3: Eyebrow laceration? Shaved that sucker clean off. ER doc freaked out, and I learned some medical dogma: Don’t shave eyebrows, they don’t grow back. Heard it later, too — all the way through training, in fact. Read more »

Dear American Academy of Pediatrics,
I think there is a mistake. Kids have recently started coming into the office with forms for sports physicals, and the form is different. See below:

Someone added stuff to the form! Not only do we have to continue the inexplicable obsession with the hernia check (for maximum humiliation of boys, we try to use only female examiners for this), there’s a bunch of new stuff. Read more »

My car was making a chirping noise when I drove forward and a high-pitched whine when I went in reverse, so I took it into the mechanic and, while he’s under the hood, for some long-deferred routine maintenance (an oil change).
So when the phone rang, I was expecting him to tell me I need new brakes. Nope, it’s the pharmacy, which can’t refill a prescription. I have to see the doctor in person. I’m not sick, but I’d deferred my routine maintenance for too long. In this case, because I’m on a maintenance drug, he needs to check my blood pressure (which by this point was rising). Read more »

Happy: Ma’am, I noticed you have an allergy to prednisone listed.
Ma’am: Oh, I can never take prednisone again. I’m allergic to it.
Happy: Really? Huh. What happened when you took prednisone?
Ma’am: It made my tongue swell up really bad.
Happy: Huh. What did they give you to reverse the allergic reaction?
Ma’am: Some sort of steroid through my IV.
I’m thinking this qualifies as a raging case of systemic fibromyallergia.

This “Fletchers Castoria” ad from 1941 is priceless. And as someone who spends his days working with bound-up grumps like Mary, I was reassured to know that horrific constipation is not a me-generation problem born of chicken fingers and Goldfish. ”Laxative tantrums,” however, are new to me. I seem to have pretty good luck with Miralax and Kristalose in my office. Your mileage (or tantrums) may vary.
