Thanks to Medscape for including my take in their recent article, “Is Twitter a “must” for doctors?

I discuss some common sense tips doctors should follow while using Twitter:

1. Patient privacy is paramount. Do not discuss individual cases or provide patient advice via Twitter.
2. Use Twitter to point your patients to trustworthy online health information sources.
3. Use Twitter as a tool to promote your practice’s brand. More and more patients are using Twitter; those who do are likely to feel positive about their physicians using it as well. More than just a fad, Pho says that Twitter is here to stay and offers tremendous potential.
4. Remind your patients using Twitter: Be careful whom you follow. Anyone can sign up for Twitter claiming to be a physician. Read more »

Social Media Tips For Healthcare Professionals

Whenever I talk about medical professionals using social media, people are surprised by what I say. Most people think they can hide online and never have to reveal their real identity. I think they are wrong. In the online world, it’s much easier to find out private information about someone who wasn’t cautious enough than in real life. A recent example includes Doctors warned of Facebook flirts (e-Health article):

The Medical Defence Union said it was aware of a number of cases where patients have attempted to proposition doctors by sending them an unsolicited message on Facebook or similar sites. The medical defence body said it would be “wholly inappropriate” to respond to a patient making an advance in such a way. Read more »

Physicians’ Anemic Response To Healthcare Reform: Passivity Or Denial

With the turn of the calendar to the new decade, the reality of health care reform has set in for doctors and patients. Already cuts to physician salaries and patient access to care are becoming starkly apparent to those of us on the front lines of health care.

I wonder why doctors have been so ineffectual relative to the other special interests “at the table,” in the health care debate? One would think that those with the knowledge base and skill to manage their patients would be the ultimate power brokers in the efforts of health care reform. Yet here we are, watching the commoditization of our profession at the hands of lawyers and politicians in Washington, eager to avoid being perceived as the spoiler. Read more »

Pharma Discloses Physician Relationships – Now What?

This was the year that Pharma disclosed the names and payments of their physician consultants.  Look here for physicians speaking and consulting with Merck, GlaxoSmithKline, Lilly, and Pfizer.

Physician disclosure of conflict is important.  It helps put a physician’s opinion and point of view into a context. Disclosure has long been the standard in the academic world.  This represents the first time that such information has been made available to the general public.

But how will patients use this information and how will it affect care and outcomes?  Should patients flatly avoid physicians or others who have a relationship with a pharmaceutical company?  And should patients routinely screen physicians for conflict?

I don’t know the answer to these questions.  I’m not sure patients know the answer to these questions.  I suspect patients may not like the idea but would be willing to overlook a pharma connection when the reputation of the physician is impeccable.

Transparency is all the rage.  Expect more. But I’m wondering how the average health consumer will practically process the information.

Should Physicians Accept Gifts From Patients?

Are gifts for doctors appropriate in the physician-patient relationship? Or should doctors refuse all offerings of gratitude that come their way?

Patients often give gifts to doctors as an appreciative sign of great thanks for  for the care they provide.  Some years I may go unappreciated for my efforts.   Some years I get thanked for a job well done for spending time with the patient and their family.   Some years I have patients that hate me.  Some years I even I have  patients that hate me and love me.   Read more »
